2017 has been an exceptional year for air freight. The market has developed a new dynamic characterized by tight transport capacity and high freight rates. Panalpina’s early prediction of a very busy peak season in the last quarter turned out to be correct. In October, Panalpina recorded its highest ever monthly Air Freight volumes, a record that was beaten only one month later in November.

With the air freight peak season picking up, the skies are getting busier by the hour. Already in September, Panalpina’s global head of Air Freight, Lucas Kuehner, in an interview singled out HKG to LAX as one key lane where capacity would get even tighter. One month later, the scenario is a reality: “We are running at full capacity but will always find a solution for our customers."

Looking for one of the smallest particles – neutrinos – requires not only international cooperation but also quite a huge piece of scientific equipment. Panalpina recently helped to move one from CERN in Switzerland to Fermilab at the University of Chicago, where it arrived at the end of July 2017. It was a closely watched voyage.

Panalpina continues a string of successful new-route developments in the Americas. In little over two years of cooperation with the manufacturer of aluminum containers Crown Colombiana, and after gaining new business with the company between the US and Colombia in 2016, Panalpina has secured an additional contract to move about 3,500 TEUs of ocean freight from Brazil to Colombia.

Panalpina has recently helped Cabot Corporation, a leading global performance materials and specialty chemicals company based in the USA, to deliver around 260 tons of carbon black from its production facility in Italy to the end customer’s tire-manufacturing plant in Thailand within eight days.

Panalpina has gained its largest award with a specific oil and gas major to date. The company was awarded with a long-term contract to manage transportation for a gas project in Iraq. The contract will run over a minimum of five years and involve high air and LCL (less than container load) ocean freight volumes. Work has already begun.

The summer period is usually a calmer time for air freight – but not this year. The strong market development with high volumes will likely continue for the rest of the year, further widening the gap between demand and supply. “The challenges are manifold, but we haven taken action to secure extra capacities to meet the growing demand,” says Marc van Dommele, regional head of Air Freight Europe.

Panalpina continues to upgrade its new operational IT platform and is in the middle of its roll-out in Germany. Ocean Freight is currently the prime focus and will be followed by Air Freight. Germany is already handling the highest number of transactions on the new platform. Panalpina’s new transport management system will secure significant operational benefits.

Panalpina has reached a new milestone in the roll-out of its single warehouse management system JDA across all of its logistics facilities around the world. The 50th site went live with JDA WMS in France. Shortly before that, JDA WMS was implemented at facilities in the USA and Belgium. The sites in Newtown and Brussels are part of a global distribution network for the healthcare customer IBA.

Chicago is not New York. Evidently. So last year, when Panalpina decided to serve its JFK air freight customers from its Chicago office, it created a bit of a stir. People asked: Are you shutting everything down at JFK? Will you do no more air freight out of New York? Well, five months down the road, quite the opposite is the case.

With the 76 ton subsea tree successfully loaded and secured in the hold beneath him, loadmaster Yrii Rudko’s job was done for now. Sitting in the cabin at the back of the An-124, seat belt fastened, he could feel how 400 tons of mighty flying equipment and cargo accelerated down runway 34 at Senai International Airport in Malaysia. Cambodia’s capital city of Phnom Penh, is now home to Panalpina’s latest venture in Asia. The new office became operational in August, providing global and local customers with air freight and ocean freight services, customer brokerage, in-land transportation, cross-border trucking (with Vietnam and Thailand), Container Freight Station consolidation, and warehousing and storage services.

Bruno is pretty upbeat these days. A few weeks ago, he reached an agreement with Belgium-based medical device company IBA. Panalpina will soon be offering comprehensive value-added warehousing and global transportation services to IBA from its hub at Brussels Airport. For this purpose, a new 2,800 m2 facility is being built. Construction is about to begin.

It made the headlines earlier this year. For the first time ever, a standard farmed Norwegian salmon was worth more than a barrel of oil. While there is just one type of salmon exported from Norway, it comes in several sizes for different markets. In Taipei they normally make chops out of the salmon, so they order the bigger fish. The U.S. prefers the fillet as opposed to the whole fish.

With the Brazil Wings service, Panalpina offers scheduled main deck capacity to South America from the U.S. The many benefits of this and many other services will again be presented at Intermodal South America. Since Brazil Wings launched in 2015, customers have mostly used it for high-tech products, heavy machines and equipment for agriculture, chemicals as well as aerospace and consumer goods.
