Panalpina Energy and Project Solutions executed another #MajorMove with two port-to-door shipments for one of Brazil’s leading ceramics makers. The move included ocean and overland transportation of an industrial mill and a hydraulic press from Genoa, Italy, to Paranaguá, one of the main gateways in southern Brazil, as well as the installation of both machines in Tijucas, Santa Catarina.

2017 was a record year for DSV with performance beyond expectation. After a strong Q4 2017, we are able to report full-year earnings for 2017 at the high end of our latest outlook and a very strong cash flow. Airlifting 42,000 kg of frozen guacamole from Mexico to the UK in ten shipments over a six-week period might seem odd. Why ship frozen food by air? If the customer was happy with having the product sent over six weeks, wouldn’t a single shipment by ocean be more reasonable?

In an increasingly digital and automated freight forwarding environment, Panalpina is using Validaide, an open online platform it has co-developed, to qualify its key suppliers. The recently launched tool is already live in the first Panalpina business units, with all the remaining business units scheduled to go live by the end of the first quarter of 2018.

Looking for one of the smallest particles – neutrinos – requires not only international cooperation but also quite a huge piece of scientific equipment. Panalpina recently helped to move one from CERN in Switzerland to Fermilab at the University of Chicago, where it arrived at the end of July 2017. It was a closely watched voyage.

Panalpina was recently contracted by Salini Impregilo (ISJV), a leading global construction firm, to transport the two main towers of a new rail bridge for Sydney Metro, Australia’s biggest public transport project. Transport for NSW, the authority that manages the transport services in the state of New South Wales, Australia and owns the project, tasked ISJV to build the bridge.

Panalpina has recently helped Cabot Corporation, a leading global performance materials and specialty chemicals company based in the USA, to deliver around 260 tons of carbon black from its production facility in Italy to the end customer’s tire-manufacturing plant in Thailand within eight days.

Panalpina’s hub at Luxembourg Airport has been officially licensed by Certisys to handle organic fruits and vegetables. With Luxembourg (Certisys) and Amsterdam (SKAL), Panalpina now has two airport locations in Europe that are licensed for the handling of organic perishables. Both are directly connected to the tarmac, ensuring the shortest possible route between aircraft and transit storage.

The summer period is usually a calmer time for air freight – but not this year. The strong market development with high volumes will likely continue for the rest of the year, further widening the gap between demand and supply. “The challenges are manifold, but we haven taken action to secure extra capacities to meet the growing demand,” says Marc van Dommele, regional head of Air Freight Europe.

Increasingly, cargo catches a train in China and then travels more than 9,000 km to Europe. Over the last few years, rail services that link Asia with Europe have become an important alternative to air and ocean freight transportation. From 2014 to 2016, Panalpina’s rail volumes from China to Europe tripled and many major shippers now transport sizeable volumes by rail.

It was a move to remember for life. Willi Tobler, Panalpina’s global head of transport engineering for Energy and Project Solutions talks in more detail about the challenges he and his team faced when a 76 ton subsea tree for an oil and gas customer had to be loaded onto an Antonov-124 in Malaysia. The tree’s final destination was on the seabed of a gas field located off the coast of Trinidad.

On the fourth loading attempt everything finally came into place and gone were the worry lines in the faces of everyone involved: The Christmas tree for the Caribbean was correctly positioned inside the aircraft. It had been inched past the most critical section right under the cockpit of the An-124, where the maximum vertical clearance is 4400 mm. Every single one of these millimeters was needed.

Following last year’s UN Climate Talks in Paris and as part of a global effort to mitigate climate change, Panalpina has delivered on its promise and set science-based emissions targets for the coming years. Panalpina is now one of 32 international companies to have such targets that have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative.
