International freight forwarding and logistics company Panalpina is establishing its presence in Oman, leveraging the company’s long-standing experience in Project Solutions and the Energy sector to support the country’s burgeoning economic and infrastructural growth. Panalpina Oman expects to open its office in the capital Muscat by the end of the third quarter in 2019.

Panalpina’s new charter tool provides an up-to-date overview of scheduled cargo flights and of all cargo aircraft in the world – big and small – available for chartering on any given day. The charter tool features drag-and-drop origin and destination functionality, and shows current aircraft availability by geography and routes.

Shell has awarded Panalpina a new warehouse management and distribution contract that will transform Shell’s supply chain in and out of Singapore into a full end-to-end operation. The new agreement with Shell goes in hand with Panalpina’s push for the further development of operations in Singapore and Asia-Pacific.

Panalpina was recently called in for help by one of its largest oil and gas customers in Angola to avoid a shutdown at one of their main offshore platforms. A critical cargo of specialized pipes, bundles and racks had had to be moved from Malabo in Equatorial Guinea to Cabinda, Angola in a port-to-port operation, and Panalpina deployed its African Star to save the day.

Panalpina recently delivered the main components for the AM3 offshore platform of the Area Magallanes Incremental Project (PIAM in Spanish) from Texas in the US to Punta Quilla, Argentina. The move was commissioned by EPC Techint, which provides worldwide engineering, procurement, construction, operation and management for high complexity, large-scale projects.

In 2017, leading integrated services company Downer awarded Panalpina with the Ross River Solar Farm contract. Panalpina will control shipping, customs clearance, inland transport, warehousing and site coordination for ocean freight from Asia and the USA.

Renewables are an important part of the energy mix, and Panalpina is putting significant resources into the sector. Panalpina’s Energy and Project Solutions recently secured three key contracts to manage a total of six projects in Australia – five solar farms and a biomass power plant. The projects, including one by thyssenkrupp, will transform the renewable energy sector in the country.

Al Rushaid is one of Saudi Aramco’s main suppliers and a large Saudi conglomerate which provides services through partnerships in many different industries including oil and gas, manufacturing and construction. Pending regulatory approval, Panalpina will be tasked with managing the logistical aspects of Al Rushaid’s subsidiaries and joint ventures.

Looking for one of the smallest particles – neutrinos – requires not only international cooperation but also quite a huge piece of scientific equipment. Panalpina recently helped to move one from CERN in Switzerland to Fermilab at the University of Chicago, where it arrived at the end of July 2017. It was a closely watched voyage.

Panalpina has gained its largest award with a specific oil and gas major to date. The company was awarded with a long-term contract to manage transportation for a gas project in Iraq. The contract will run over a minimum of five years and involve high air and LCL (less than container load) ocean freight volumes. Work has already begun.

The FPSO Glen Lyon is one of the biggest oil and gas production units ever made. During its tow from South Korea to Norway, up to 160 crew members representing 18 different nationalities worked and lived on board the Glen Lyon. But what is it like to work and live on a vessel that takes five minutes to walk from one end to the other? Panalpina talked to the captain to find out.

Between December 2015 and June 2016, the Glen Lyon traveled 15,600 nautical miles in total, traveling at an average speed of 6.4 knots first from South Korea to Norway and then onwards to its permanent location west of the Shetland Islands. Panalpina assisted BP with the tow of the FPSO Glen Lyon by taking charge of responsibilities such as material management, husbandry and ship agency services.
