Looking for one of the smallest particles – neutrinos – requires not only international cooperation but also quite a huge piece of scientific equipment. Panalpina recently helped to move one from CERN in Switzerland to Fermilab at the University of Chicago, where it arrived at the end of July 2017. It was a closely watched voyage.

Panalpina is to acquire the Dutch company Interfresh Airfreight Handling. Interfresh specializes in the customs clearance and last-mile distribution of imported perishables from Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. 24 hours can seem endless when a hurricane passes over you. The people of Saint Martin had to live through this experience on Wednesday, September 6, as Hurricane Irma battered the Caribbean island causing widespread devastation. The category 5 storm left the island’s residents isolated and in desperate need for aid, and Panalpina was called to help.

Panalpina continues a string of successful new-route developments in the Americas. In little over two years of cooperation with the manufacturer of aluminum containers Crown Colombiana, and after gaining new business with the company between the US and Colombia in 2016, Panalpina has secured an additional contract to move about 3,500 TEUs of ocean freight from Brazil to Colombia.

Panalpina’s hub at Luxembourg Airport has been officially licensed by Certisys to handle organic fruits and vegetables. With Luxembourg (Certisys) and Amsterdam (SKAL), Panalpina now has two airport locations in Europe that are licensed for the handling of organic perishables. Both are directly connected to the tarmac, ensuring the shortest possible route between aircraft and transit storage.

The summer period is usually a calmer time for air freight – but not this year. The strong market development with high volumes will likely continue for the rest of the year, further widening the gap between demand and supply. “The challenges are manifold, but we haven taken action to secure extra capacities to meet the growing demand,” says Marc van Dommele, regional head of Air Freight Europe.

Mike, global head of Logistics and Manufacturing at Panalpina, was presented with the prestigious LEO Award by German trade publication DVZ on Friday evening in Hamburg.

Chicago is not New York. Evidently. So last year, when Panalpina decided to serve its JFK air freight customers from its Chicago office, it created a bit of a stir. With the 76 ton subsea tree successfully loaded and secured in the hold beneath him, loadmaster Yrii Rudko’s job was done for now. Sitting in the cabin at the back of the An-124, seat belt fastened, he could feel how 400 tons of mighty flying equipment and cargo accelerated down runway 34 at Senai International Airport in Malaysia. On the fourth loading attempt everything finally came into place and gone were the worry lines in the faces of everyone involved: The Christmas tree for the Caribbean was correctly positioned inside the aircraft. It had been inched past the most critical section right under the cockpit of the An-124, where the maximum vertical clearance is 4400 mm. Every single one of these millimeters was needed.

Cambodia’s capital city of Phnom Penh, is now home to Panalpina’s latest venture in Asia. The new office became operational in August, providing global and local customers with air freight and ocean freight services, customer brokerage, in-land transportation, cross-border trucking (with Vietnam and Thailand), Container Freight Station consolidation, and warehousing and storage services.

Bruno is pretty upbeat these days. A few weeks ago, he reached an agreement with Belgium-based medical device company IBA. Panalpina will soon be offering comprehensive value-added warehousing and global transportation services to IBA from its hub at Brussels Airport. For this purpose, a new 2,800 m2 facility is being built. Construction is about to begin.

With the Brazil Wings service, Panalpina offers scheduled main deck capacity to South America from the U.S. The many benefits of this and many other services will again be presented at Intermodal South America. Since Brazil Wings launched in 2015, customers have mostly used it for high-tech products, heavy machines and equipment for agriculture, chemicals as well as aerospace and consumer goods.
